Pools have always been a massive (and expensive) luxury but in recent years the price for a new pool installation has climbed to new, all time high levels. With the cost for a new pool being so high is it still worth it to have a pool installed? The answer to this question will come down to what your priorities are for the pool. If you are putting in a pool because you are trying to create a relaxing, family first environment at home then you are on the right track. Throw in the potential health benefits from both more relaxing but also more exercise and you can start to see how, at least for some people, installing a pool can provide a great deal of value...but it's going to come at a cost.
As a seasoned and experienced pool builder I can tell you with certainty that a major mistake people make when building a pool is to install everything and the kitchen sink also. The logic here is simple that you are probably only going to build this one pool, ever, so you want it to be great and have all of the features that you can imagine. Attached spa, waterfalls, fancy lighting, glorious tile and interior finishings, state of the art equipment...this can take a pool from the $70k to $100k range, which is already pretty darned high if you ask most people, and puts the price tag for your new pool (and spa) installation somewhere in the $200k to $300k range. It gets out of control pretty quickly when you start bolting on individual upgrades like in-floor cleaning, automatic covers or dual heating systems which could cost as much as $10,000 to $15,000 each. If you want to spend an extra $50,000 on fancy tiles we can do that too! Building pools is expensive but adding the fancy trimmings to everything is going to put you in the poorhouse before the pool is even ready to swim in. When you build a pool, build for value...install a quality pool structure and cut all of the frills and unneeded expenses - especially any item which is able to be added at a later point without penalty.
