ABS pipe is not considered suitable for swimming pool systems for a few reasons. Primarily ABS is not intended for chlorinated water systems as the ABS itself is not compatible with chlorinated water systems. ABS is also most commonly used for non-pressure rated drainage applications such as DWV (drainage, waste, vent) and while some solid core ABS pipe can be pressure rated the vast majority of ABS is cellular core and not intended for pressure rated applications. The slip joints on ABS and DWV fittings are also too short to be suitable for pressure rated applications and this is one of the easiest ways to tell pressure rated fittings from drainage and non-pressure rated fittings.
While some pool owners have been lucky enough to have an ABS plumbing system last the test of time, more often than not these systems will develop leaks and fail early due to the wrong construction materials being used. Throughout the history of modern pool construction there have been many materials tried and abandoned for plumbing material such as galvanized steel pipes, copper pipes, PEX piping, LDPE, HDPE and ABS. Modern standards for pool construction would be to use schedule 40 pressure rated PVC. Flexible PVC hose is common in some cold climate applications and areas however this flexible PVC is definitively inferior to schedule 40 rigid PVC.
