How deep is an average swimming pool? Modern swimming pool installations tend to be around 5.5 feet in depth (1.68m) for the deep end swimming area. This is quite a bit different than the average swimming pool depth of residential pools installed through the 1970's and 1980's which was around 8.5 feet in depth on average (2.59m). The changes for average pool depth over time are likely due to a few different factors such as properties being much smaller in densely populated urban areas, the liability associated with pools intended for diving, and the cost associated with heating and chemically treating larger volumes of water. This means half as much money to filter the water, and half as much money to heat the pool...not to mention the installation costs will be less also. In total, diving pools are rare these days and the average residential pool being installed will likely have an overall depth of less than six feet.
