Ball Valves Or Diverter Valves - Which Are Better For Swimming Pools?
▶️

If you want the shortest possible answer to the question about which valves are the best for pools then the answer is diverter valves. Further I think that most pool technicians would agree that Jandy brand diverter valves are the most popular. So does that mean there are no other viable options for pool valves? Not at all. There are a host of other pool valves to choose from which is great because diverter valves are fairly expensive especially when compared to other valve types like ball valves. However, be warned, not all valves are created equal and you almost certainly want to avoid the use of non-union ball valves. They are definitely a known problem. Here is an article where I talk about this more: Pool valves to avoid!

Diverter valves are the best because they are servicable as well as very long lasting. They are also compatible with motorized valve actuators which are needed for pool automation systems. The only real downside to diverter valves is the cost. If you need three, six, a dozen or more valves for your pool then the costs will start to add up pretty quickly. If you have an expensive or luxury pool then perhaps the more expensive diverter valves makes the most sense...however there are many entry level and budget pool which would likely be better served by a ball valve versus diverter valves simply due to the cost savings. Just be sure to get single union ball valves at minimum! Never use the non-union valves. In my experience they are a guaranteed failure point.

For entry level pools the single union ball valves are probably the best overall option. For more robust swimming pool installations diverter valves are likely worth the investement in your pool system and open the door for automation and motorized valve actuator control of your pool system features. The best names in pool valves are Jandy, Pentair, Hayward, Praher, Spears and Laasco.
