Chemical free pool systems have long been desired by swimming pool owners but more now in recent years than ever before pool owners are becoming increasingly aware of harmful chemicals and interested in ways to reduce chemical exposure in pool water. Why do we not see more chemical free pools or alternatives to traditional pool chemicals in backyard pools? The shortest possible answer is safety. It is not as easy as you might think to create a stagnant water environment that is actually safe for bathers and swimmers to use. Stagnant water is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and the open air environment to pools means that contamination of the water is a certainty. The primary reason you do not see more chemical free pools or alternatives to traditional pool chemicals is simply because these chemicals work and will protect you from much more dangerous things in the pool water.

In an effort to reduce exposure to potentially harmful pool chemicals you could easily expose yourself to something much more serious like an infection, communicable disease, parasites and even things like flesh eating bacteria. The safety that chlorine and traditional chemical treatments in pools provides is not to be taken lightly. While there are some alternatives to traditional chemicals there are few and far in between, and usually these alternatives are more expensive and also harder technically to use, maintain and monitor in the pool water. Stated simply, the traditional chemical treatments are used because they are easy, cheap and actually work. If you want to explore some meaningful ways to actually reduce chemical exposure in your pool without introducing potentially dangerous side effects you might like to read this article about chlorine free pools.
