There are actually quite a few different forms and kinds of chlorine you can be using in your pool. By this I am referring to the physical form that the chlorine comes in...like a liquid form or a compressed tablet or puck. However, in addition to these forms there is also the general type of chlorine as in, stabilized chlorine or unstabilized chlorine. For example, you can in fact get chlorine pucks which are stabilized chlorine but also you could get different chlorine pucks which are unstabilized chlorine only. So what is stabilized chlorine and why does any of this matter?
Chlorine is stabilized with cyanuric acid (CYA) and this is something you are already familiar with as a pool owner. CYA, sometimes called water conditioner, is maintained in your pool at 30 to 50ppm in order to prevent the sun from destroying your chlorine levels every day. In the same way CYA is utilized for certain chlorine products which means that any time you add one of these chlorine products to your pool you are also adding more CYA which quickly can climb to problematic levels. In order to lower CYA levels you would need to drain and refill your pool with fresh water free of CYA and so for many pool owners there is a definitive advantage to choosing unstabilized chloring for your primary sanitizer - like liquid chlorine for example!
