Diving boards used to be so common that you would rarely see a pool that didn't have one. What happened to all of the diving boards? Modern pools rarely have diving boards and if they do they tend to be older pools with existing diving boards left over from older generations. When these diving boards eventually fail many of these pool owners will discover that it is difficult if not impossible to find replacement parts like new platforms, springs, hardware and bases. So why is it so hard to find diving boards for both new pools but also existing swimming pools? In a word, liability. In a few more words, modern pools are not really large enough to safely have and use diving boards. Pools are much smaller than they used to be in general, and the depth and size of residential pools really is minimally adequate if adequate at all for full sized adults to be diving in head first.
In the 1970's the average pool being installed was 20x40' with a nine foot deep end. The modern pool being installed today is much smaller. 12x24' and 16x32' being the two most common sizes for new installations...and this is simply too small to safely allow for diving let alone diving from a raised platform. The long slope on pools is simply too close to the diving board to dive in safely, and diving any direction except straight ahead reduces the diving envelope considerably from there. Insurance carriers do not like diving boards and sometimes will penalize you with additional premiums for having one. Some might cancel your policy entirely. Diving boards are like the lawn darts of the swimming pool industry. We all had fun with them when we were young but ultimately this was perhaps one step too far in pursuit of fun and modern safety standards just do not allow for them. Diving rocks are more common than diving boards these days, and to that extent they are both have about the same amount of bounce to them!
