Using copper pipes and copper pipe fittings in pool skimmer baskets is a trick you see online about swimming pool care and easy DIY hacks to save money and make caring for your pool easier. Unfortunately there is almost no value in putting copper pipes into your skimmer baskets however there is just enough truth in the rumor to lend credence to the idea that this will actually help your pool. In reality it will not help your pool and potential can actually cause problems such as staining in the pool as well as the dreaded green hair situation which you might have heard can happen in pools...well, copper in pool water would be the exact cause for people coming out of the pool with their hair dyed green.

Copper is sometimes used in pool water care as copper is a natural algicide meaning in the right doses you could use copper to minimize algae growth in the water. However, copper treatments in pools are not intended to be a front line treatment process but instead used only when the pool has deteriorated to the point where major intervention is needed. If the water had ben cared for properly then no external algicide would be needed, copper or otherwise. Using a copper based algicide at this point may be the lesser of two evils but this still is entirely different than copper in the form of pipe or pipe fittings in the strainer baskets. Watch the attached video to learn more about why copper pipes in your pool skimmer is not going to get the results you are hoping for.
