If you are a fan of garden statues that look like Easter Island (Moai) Heads then you probably already know how hard it is to find things like this for sale. There are a few options out there, and many of the large chain hardware stores might have one or two available...but even if you can find one it will probably be made from plastic. Other than the plastic or resin statues from hardware stores your next best bet would be to try landscaping and garden supply stores. Stores like these often carry lines of cast concrete statuary. The problem with cast concrete statuary is that it is solid concrete and extremely heavy. Even small pieces will require machinery of some kind to move. Another detraction from cast concrete statuary, at least in my mind, is that it is all just one color. Almost all cast concrete statuary is sold without any pigment or dye in the mix, nor any paint or stain on the finish product. If you were hoping for something other than concrete gray then you may find yourself out of luck.
When I started making my own garden statues about 15 years ago, the lack of products available on the market was my primary motivating factor. I know funky looking garden statues and faces are certainly not to everyone's taste. I personally like adding some whimsical character to backyards and as a pool contractor I often had requests for "something interesting" or "something fun" for their backyard. As an artist I felt compelled to try to make something myself however my artistic ability is certainly not in the drawing and sculpting category. Fortunately my technical process is very strong, and I have just enough sculpting skill to make some interesting pieces.
The reality is that at minimum 8 out of 10 readers on this page will be able to draw and sculpt better than I. If you would like to try your hand at making garden statues like these then you should check out the artificial rock & garden statues instructional DVD that I released. The information contained in these DVD sets will show you the technical process that I use from beginning to end and you can make your own statues - most likely much better than the ones that I can make.
If you are not really interested in making your own statues, and you do like the ones that I make, then feel free to contact me about buying one of the ones you see pictured here. I do not pursue this as a business - I like making statues as a hobby and my wife has placed a hard limit on how many I can have filling our gardens at one time. If you would like one then please email me directly and I would be happy to discuss shipping one out to you. Please be sure to include your address or at least postal code so I can estimate some shipping costs.

All of these statues are unique and hand made by myself, meaning they are not molded or cast for repeat productions. If the one that you are interested in is sold then feel free to contact me and let me know which one you were looking at, and I would be happy to attempt to make another one of that style. Since these products are unique using a process that I developed over 15 years of practice, you will not find care instructions for these statues anywhere other than this page.
Weathering Outdoors - These statues should be able to be outside, year round, in any climate. I am located in Ontario Canada and I have many pieces that have been sitting outside, completely unprotected, for up to 15 years. As these statues age the paint colors can start to fade. Some people like how it makes the statue look naturally aged. Older statues that are stored outside may also begin to grow moss just like a real stone might.
Concrete Sealer - If you want to preserve the original look, finish and color of your statue then you can apply a coat of water based concrete sealer yearly via a spray bottle or paint brush. So long as the concrete sealer that you use is water based then it should be compatible with the sealer which I have already used. To be on the safe side you should try a small test patch before sealing the entire statue. The original application of sealer that I use on the statues should be good for at least two years. If you prefer the natural, aged look, then you never need to seal your statue.
Materials - These statues are made from a foam core that I make from recycled hot tub covers which I intercept before they are thrown into landfills. This helps to keep the cost of my materials down as low as possible (virgin styrofoam is expensive) as well as keeping gigantic slabs of otherwise useless styrofoam from being thrown out.
What To Expect - It is exceedingly difficult to take good pictures of these statues due to the texture, sculpting lines and multi-layered granite paint coloring. The general consensus from people who see these statues is that they look much better in person than in pictures on this page. If you are interested in a hand made statue but are unsure of what "artificial rock" is - it looks and feels like real stone. Very convincing in person with a definitive feel of quality...heavy, but much lighter than real stone would be.
Cast Garden Statues & Flower Pots
In addition to the hand made, custom garden statues shown above, I also have worked extensively with mold making in order to create cast reproductions for some of the smaller and more interesting flower pots and garden statues I have made over the years. Mold making is a very challenging technical process and I had to learn a ton about it in order to be able to product the pieces you see here. In the end I learned a few important things about mold making which are:
1) Mold making materials are very expensive
2) Polyurethane molds are the best for concrete castings
I experimented with fiberglass molds, latex molds, silicone molds and just about every other kind you can think of. Each have their advantages and disadvantages but I found that the polyurethane molds stood up well to the abuse of concrete castings while being slightly less expensive than silicone based mold rubbers. I no longer pursue making these flower pots and garden statues, but I still do have all of the molds (over 500 in total) and I occasionally will do a run of castings. If there is one or more of these garden statues that you are interested in please feel free to contact me and let me know. I can add your request to the list for the next time I do a run of castings.

The molding and casting process was a huge challenge for me being that I do not work with mold making professionally - only as a hobby. Eventually I arrived at a process that allowed me to make the garden planters and flower pots that you see above with either a fully open bottom, or with a closed bottom (with only a small hole for drainage). The fully open bottom planters would go directly into your garden and you would allow the roots of your plants to grow through the bottom directly into the ground. For a more contained vessel I modified the mold design to allow for a closed bottom that only has a small hole for water drainage purposes.
While these flower pots can withstand freezing temperatures, it is not uncommon for them to crack once they fill with water. If you were to leave them outside for the winter you would want to put them upside down to make sure that they do not fill with water and then freeze. Even with drainage holes the water can accumulate if any snow, debris or ice blocks the drainage hole.
How To Order
I make all of these statues as a hobby and they are not available in any store, anywhere. If there is something on this page that you want then please contact me and let me know where you are located and what you are interested in. The larger statues are all custom made and unique and once they are sold then that's it. I could potentially make you another one similar, but you would have to contact me to discuss this.
The smaller, molded and cast flower pots and garden planters are something that I am able to reproduce copies of. I do not maintain a stock of any of these items and if there are some you are interested in please contact me with your location and a list of what you are interested in. I will be able to provide you with an estimate for costs including shipping. If you are interested I can then make your order which usually results in about 30 days lead time during the warmer months and potentially more during colder months.
Thanks for checking out this page of my hobby statues - and remember if you want to learn how to make this kind of stuff yourself I have an instructional DVD series that can teach just about anyone to make artificial rock and garden statues.
