Pool heaters are usually the most expensive individual piece of equipment in the filtration system for swimming pools. Natural gas and propane fired heaters are significantly expensive, usually costing a few thousand dollars to buy, $3000 or so, but electric heat pumps are even more expensive than this with many of the larger models costing in excess of $5000 - and these prices are just for the heater itself and do not include installation costs which are significant for all of these heaters. It used to be that a pool heater could be expected to last upwards of 30 years but modern pool heaters being installed today are not projected to last this long.
Modern pool heaters seem to be more reactive to poor water chemistry than they used to be in previous generations. It is not uncommon to find new pool heaters which are damaged beyond repair while being 3 months, 6 months or a year old. You would think it would take some pretty drastic and adverse water quality to cause a failure of an appliance that costs $3k to $5k and should be lasting for decades but that does not seem to be the case. Even moderately poor water quality over the long term, or short term water quality with very low pH or high sanitizer levels have the ability to strip metals from inside your heater can cause irreversible damage...and quickly also! With proper care and water maintenance 10 to 15 years is a more reasonable expectation for longevity of your pool heater.
