Are hotel pools safe to go swimming in? Unlike residential pools which have no oversight or inspection relating to swimming pool safety or water quality, most commercial swimming pools (like hotel pools) are required to have monitoring and inspections for safety infractions. Too many problems with water quality or a potential safety / entrapment issue with the pool system could result in the pool being closed. For this reason hotels and other commercial pools typically would be safe to go swimming since there is an expectation of professional maintenance of the pool. In reality this is not a guarantee and accidents and illness can and do happen from hotel pools.
When swimming in a hotel pool, or considering to swim in a hotel pool you should first consider the quality and clarity of the water. There should be absolutely no visible algae or cloudiness to the water. This would indicate a problem with the water chemistry and you should avoid swimming in this pool. In regards to entrapment hazards from improper drain covers or pool system configuration there is unfortunately no way to observe from the pool deck whether the pool is safe or not. Use common sense and avoid all skimmers, main drains, suction points and returns in pools. These are not toys and if a problem or accident were to happen this is where it would occur. Better to avoid these areas entirely when swimming in an unknown hotel pool or commercial swimming pool.
