There are some problems in swimming pools which are best dealt with proactively by not letting the problem happen in the first place. Great if you know about it but a hard learning lesson for some pool owners. Broken glass is a huge liability and problem for cleaning up in swimming pools and this is an example of something that you are far better to disallow in the pool area right from the beginning. Broken glass is all but invisible underwater and generally requires draining of the pool to resolve. Raccoons are also a pest that you should deter with every opportunity given the potentially serious problem of a chlorine resistant parasite in their feces which can cause neurological problems.
Sometimes the thing you want to keep out of your pool is less insidious and more about protecting your pool and protecting your pocket book and avoiding unnecessary expenses. If you do not scoop leaves from your pool these will contribute to your chlorine demand, make you use more chemicals and make more chemical corrections, and can potentially lead to staining of your interior surface. Similarly, metals in your pool are a bad idea since these will almost certainly corrode and can leave semi-permanent stains on the interior surface of your pool. Try using ascorbic acid (vitamin c) to remove metal stains if this has happened to your pool.
