When vinyl liner pool owners choose a new liner pattern (and color) for their pool they will usually receive a book of liner samples from which to make their selection. First, it is difficult to determine how the liner will look in the pool based on a small color sample. This is something that all vinyl pool owners comment on. Next, they all look pretty similar overall. This is the reality when you choose a new pool liner for a vinyl liner pool. There is not a ton of options...more like 10 or 20 different variations of blue pool liners. So how can any one of these be any better than the others? Well, there is a specific answer to this.

It is true that all new pool liners kind of look alike and I tend to advise pool owners that these all will look good once we install them. By the time you get a new pool liner your old one will be faded, worn and tired looking so a vibrant new liner of any color / pattern is going to look good. This is when I explain that a darker print liner makes sense to me as they will incrementally increase the temperature of your pool water. Perhaps only a few degrees at maximum, but every degree helps when it comes to swimming pool water! So now, if we only look at the darker print color options this will cut the total choices in half right away. So now how do you pick the best liner from the remaining choices? This is where the magic (experience) really shines through. Read on:

Vinyl pool liners are printed on vinyl sheet stock. This sheet stock is generally available in two colors, though in recent years manufacturers are starting to offer more sheet stock colors. What this means is that the color and print from your pool liner is printed onto blank vinyl sheeting. Flip the liner samples over and look at the back side. You will see some liners are printed on white stock, while others are printed on blue stock. I tell vinyl pool owners to choose the darkest color stock...never the white stock vinyl. This is because over time the print and color will wear away on your liner and will reveal the stock color underneath. If you have a dark blue liner printed on white stock, once the dark blue wears away you will be drawn to see the white areas showing through. Things like vacuum cleaners or chemical bleaching can cause these scuffs in the print and pattern. When you have a dark blue pattern printed on dark blue liner stock you will not see any wearing in the pattern of your pool liner no matter how old and worn it gets. Plus you get the maximum amount of free water heating from the sun. This is my opinion on how to choose the best new liner for your vinyl pool.
