Vinyl pool liners are supposed to be color fast, right? Or are they? If you read the warranty that comes with your pool liner you will likely see that color is something that is excluded from your warranty coverage. So what causes fading of a liner? Swimming Pool Steve, a vinyl liner expert, explains that there are different grades of quality when it comes to the pool liner manufacturing process and some of the cheaper liners available will be cheaper specifically due to less UV inhibitor within the chemical design of the liner stock that your liner is made from. Higher quality, more expensive pool liners will contain higher UV inhibitor levels which leads to longer lasting color in liners.
In addition to the quality of your pool liner there are a number of maintenance and chemical dosing concerns which easily could be causing your pool liner to fade. Excessively high sanitizer levels (above 20ppm) can cause bleaching of the liner surface, especially if repeatedly exposed to chlorine levels this high. Non chlorine shock products can have a similar oxidizing haze effect, especially on the area of pool liner above the waterline. Even the pH can drastically affect your pool liner in negative ways (very low pH) which can damage the liner and allow for early color fading. If your color fading is localized in a few areas versus systemic fading of the whole liner this could be a result of improper chemical additions. If you add a powder chlorine product (or granular) to your pool directly without properly dissolving it first in a bucket of water this could result in bleaching of your liner in areas where the sanitizer drops and sits directly on the floor of your pool.
