Do swimming pools need a skimmer? You could definitely say that all swimming pools would benefit by having a surface skimmer. The most obvious reason being that the skimmer is what traps floating debris like leaves but assuming that you had no leave, or even if the pool is indoor where there would never be leaves, surface skimmer remains very important. The skimmer in a pool serves the function of collecting the floating oils, make-up, hair products, soaps, suntan lotions and other (floating) human runoff...without a skimmer these oils would build up on the surface of the water which would look bad and make for a poor swimming experience.
Some pools without skimmers are negative edge or vanishing edge pools and these pools commonly do not have a skimmer in the main pool (instead in the catch basin) as the pool edge itself IS a skimmer, so an in-wall skimmer a foot wide would be not effective on a pool with a 20 foot long edge skimmer which collects the surface water. Some very entry level above ground pools also do not have a skimmer as part of the filtration system which causes these pools to need to cycle their water often.
