In an ideal world when you go away for an extended period of time, like for a vacation, it would be ideal to hire a pool maintenance company to come in while you are away to keep an eye on the pool water level, the pool equipment like the filter pressure, and of course to manage the water chemistry and chlorine levels while you are gone. This is a fairly normal service request and most local pool maintenance companies should be able to offer you this convenient service. So let's look at a situation where you, for whatever reason, are unable to have a professional maintenance company maintain the pool while you are gone:
You would want to clean your pool filter and balance your pool chemistry right before you go away to give yourself the best chance to return to a problem free pool after your trip away. In addition to balancing the chemistry you will also want to raise the pool water level a little bit...at least for most pools. Evaporation can add up if you are gone for more than a week without any rains to refill the water loss. If the water level drops below the mouth of the skimmer this is where you start to develop problems for most pools. Finally, raising the free chlorine level is probably the single best thing you can do to safeguard against green water in your pool while you are away for an extended period of time. It is not a silver bullet, and 10ppm will not last for weeks by itself without more chlorine being added...but it will give you the best opportunity to avoid coming home to a green water swamp after your trip!
