What Makes Pool Water Look Blue?
▶️

Many pool owners mistakenly think that the water in their pool looks blue due to reflection of light, sky or clouds and surprisingly that is not the case...kind of. Reflection of light rays does actually cause pool water to look blue (or green) but not due to simply picking up colors from the sky. Instead it has to do with the spectrum of light colors and how each of the individual colors react inside of the water. Red and yellow spectrums of light are readily absorbed within the water, which results in an abundance of green / blue spectrum light remaining visible within the water. Further, the higher the mineral and TDS levels (total dissolved solids) the greater the remaining light will reflect and refract causing even more dramatic green and blue colors.

Even an all white swimming pool inside a house with no windows, with the entire room being bright white on the walls ceiling and floor, a swimming pool will STILL look blue when you look at the water. The deeper the water the more dramatic the coloring of the water. Higher TDS and mineral content also increases the visibility and how vivid the colors are. So what about an all black pool? Is that a thing? Actually it is. Can you guess what color the water looks in a black swimming pool? To find out read this article about black swimming pools
