Pool heaters are very expensive and they (unfortunately) do not seem to last like they used to. Rarely do you see pool heaters operating after 20, 30 or more years now like you used to a generation ago. For this reason you have to be even more diligent about protecting your heater from damage. As you will hear in this video even a single instance of very poor water quality can substantially reduce the life of your pool heater. High sanitizer levels are responsible for many prematurely failed pool heaters, as are very low pH water systems, but the worst combination of all is to have high sanitizer (chlorine) levels combined with very low pH levels (lower than 7.0) as this creates somewhat of a perfect storm for damage to the internals of your pool heater. Maintaining proper water chemistry, including saturation index neutral state, would substantially increase the life of any pool heater versus a pool heater exposed to poor water whether regularly or even just a few times!
