Vibrations are the source of most noise problems with swimming pool pumps. Single speed pool pumps which have traditionally been used for pool filtration pumps all operate at high revolutions per minute, 3450 RPM, and in doing so will develop quite a lot of noise from vibration, but also from the sound of the motor spinning at such high speeds. It has always been that pool owners complain about how loud pool pumps are and this is for the ones which are working fine. When pool pumps start to fail they can get unbearably loud!

If vibration is the concern then a high density rubber mat (even a thin one) under the pump base will help a great deal to reduce the noise the pump makes. Rigid PVC plumbing can also transmit quite a lot of vibration noise and you can sometimes isolate the pipes with a rubber coupling or a section of flexible PVC pipe. Modernly, variable speed pool pumps dominate the market for filtration pumps for pools. When you turn down the RPM of the motor you drastically reduce the amount of noise the pump makes. So much so that the other (older) solutions to noisy pool pumps almost don't apply.

Are there any other situations where you could have a loud or noisy pool pump? Most definitely! You could have failing mechanical bearings on your pump which make a metallic whine noise which will get louder and louder until the increased friction causes a heat related failure of the pump motor or pump seal. In these cases a new bearing can be installed and resolve the immediate noise problem. Another common problem for pool pumps which are too loud is a poor mechanical installation such as a 90 degree fitting installed onto the suction side pump intake (instead of a straight run of pipe equal to 5 times the pipe diameter). Another problem could be a pump with a motor that is simply too large for the plumbing size and number of pipes that you have. If you want to see an example of VS pump noise (being measured) then check out this video about pool pump noise testing.
