You want to go swimming but you have just added chemicals to the water (or need to add chemicals to the water) and you want to know how long you should wait before you jump in...and the answer will depend mostly on which chemicals exactly that you have added. Some pool chemicals are more forgiving than others when it comes to how quickly you can safely go swimming after adding them. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is commonly used to increase pH and total alkalinity in pools. It is fairly inert and relatively safe when compared to a much stronger and more caustic chemical like muriatic acid or chlorine. These chemicals pose a much greater overall risk to a swimmer and so these should be given the most respect (and time) before you venture in for a swim.
Commonly an oxidizer product is the chemical of choice to use in a pool where you need to improve the quality of the water but you still want to be swimming soon. Many of these oxidizer products advertise that it is safe to swim after only 15 minutes. For most pool chemicals a few hours should be the bare minimum to wait before you go swimming, and further to this you should rely on water testing to ensure that the chemical levels are suitable for swimmers. To see a refresher on swimming pool chemicals, which ones you need to maintain and also the order to maintain them in you can find this information in the Swimming Pool Steve 10 minute pool chemistry crash course.
