It never seems like the right time to write an update article letting y'all know what is new in the world of Swimming Pool Steve, and yes I am aware I just referred to myself in the third person there. We are comfortable with this (said with a raised pinky while drinking a cup of tea). Actually this image is not far off from the truth though the connotation is quite different. My middle finger suffered a tendon breaking so it is (and has been) quite uselessly splinted straight, effectively flipping the bird to everyone, everywhere I go. So all is normal around here! What is new with you?
I am writing this article today to update on what seems to me to be a very important milestone. After years of work and 900 videos I have just rolled past 10 million views on the Swimming Pool Steve YouTube channel. That seems like a lot of views to me. I am the first one to diminish an accomplishment the moment it has been achieved for myself, but I am feeling pretty good about this 10,000,000 number. That is a lot of zeros. Just think of how many eyes that is! That is near to, but probably slightly less than 20,000,000 eyes watching me. At an average of 28 gram each that is a total weight of 123,458.87 pounds of eyeballs! That is literally exactly 56 metric tons. 56.000001 to be more precise. I do not know which is more concerning to me, the fact that this is how I decided to measure this milestone achievement, or that it worked out to such an incredibly round number. Exactly 56 metric tons of human eyeballs have watched me on YouTube. Of course, we are counting a lot of eyes many times over which doesn't seem accurate but I am disinclined to rework the algorithm at this point. This is why I don't sleep at night by the way. Thoughts like this and that damned circus music that is always playing when I close my eyes.

I have learned a lot over the years watching videos rise and fall in popularity seemingly at random. The YouTube algorithm is constantly working to find the content that is most applicable, but also the content which retains your viewership on YouTube the most. This is actually something that hurts the DIY and self-repair markets since high quality instructional or repair videos often do not get promoted. If a video answers your question well, like how to backwash your pool filter, then you leave the platform to go perform this work. Any video that causes you to leave the platform or close the app will be highly unlikely to be promoted to other YouTube viewers. You have probably noticed the symptom if this already in that instructional and DIY videos on YouTube are often very poor quality. You used to be able to find high quality lessons and instruction but these are now buried deep in the search results in favor of a fluff video on the same subject that does not really answer all of your questions...so you keep searching for more videos. This is exactly what they want you to do, and a challenge to deal with to get decent, experienced advice out to pool and spa owners. This, to me, makes my 10,000,000 views all the sweeter. It is hard to grow a YouTube channel about repairs and DIY fixes these days.

Speaking of growing a YouTube channel let's talk about subscribers for a second here. At 35,000 subscribers I feel like I have developed a loyal following of viewers who watch and like the new content as I create it. I am sure only a small fraction of the 35,000 active subscribers I have watch, like and comment on the videos I make but it is enough to keep my channel moving forward, and more importantly enough to make me feel like I am making somewhat of a difference. It is crazy to me how may people comment about how much they appreciate the content I put out. It is way more love, and interestingly way less hate, than I would have expected getting into developing a YouTube channel. Largely my swimming pool and spa channel seems to attract friendly people, which I appreciate. The angry trolls that comment occasionally on my videos I tend to mock openly. It is my channel. I don't have to be nice to you if you show up drunk and disorderly in my comment sections!
The way things are starting to grow with YouTube now it seems that the next ten million views will come a lot faster than the first ten. The test lab for running and comparing variable speed pumps was, and is, a huge success providing tons of useful comparison content for reviewing variable speed pumps. Moving forward I hope to start to get more videos pool-side as I redevelop my core website content. With over 400 pages, the swimmingpoolsteve.com website has grown beyond what I could have imagined and so I want to go back to the beginning and retool and revamp the earliest and most core content about caring fr pools and spas. If you follow me on YouTube, thank you for helping me reach this ridiculous, amazing milestone goal. I appreciate the weight of your eyeballs individually, truly.
