Tiling Over Old Tile In a Pool?

When it comes time to tile and refinish the interior of your (concrete) swimming pool the costs are going to add up quickly for a project as large and involved as this is. For this reason you may find yourself wanting to cut corners to save money, or worse yet have contractors advising you poorly about the best options for renovating the tile and plaster in your pool...and this can end up costing you a lot down the road! Tile is one of the most expensive finishes you can buy for your home and largely the reason is due to the impressively long service life of tile. In short you invest in tile surfaces. However, in order for a tile installation to last, in a pool or anywhere else, it needs to be installed properly. Improperly installed tiles is the most common cause for early (and expensive) tile failures.

A new installation of pool tiles is only as good as the substrate it is installed over. Existing pool tiles would be too sheer and slippery for any sort of quality tile installation. Yes, thin set is aggressively modified with bonding agents and will attach to existing tiles, even gloss tiles, but the connection will not be sound enough to last the test of time and the rigorous environment of being installed in a swimming pool. If you are going to install new tiles in your swimming pool the correct method is to completely remove the existing tiles and the existing thin set. You want to get all the way down to bare, substrate concrete shell and start fresh with a new mud base preparation where you can be sure about the materials and technical process you are using. That way you can be confident that your tiles are installed correctly and your investment on this premiere interior surface will last the test of time in your pool.
