Swimming Pool Steve Travel Blog

This is the travel blog for Swimming Pool Steve. Here you will find stories, articles and media from my traveling adventures. Different than other travel blogs, what makes this interesting is that I am not well traveled. I did not start traveling until I was almost 40 and have very little experience outside my Country of birth, Canada. I also write in a style that allows you to feel what it is like to actually be there for yourself. What this amounts to is stories from the perspective of a real person just figuring things out as they come up - and you can come along with me and share in some of these adventures!

How it all started
One day I woke up and realized that I had been talking about traveling the world for as long as I can remember, but I had not actually done any traveling! It suddenly occurred to me that I am not young anymore, and that traveling is something you need to make happen - not just a passive pursuit that I might casually talk about. Travel takes work, and planning, and a lot of nerve to do if you have never done such things before. Despite my lack of experience I decided to start my new travel adventures with a month long trip to Vietnam...by myself. A lot of people thought I was crazy for making my first trip solo, but it seemed like a good way to pull the Band-Aid off quickly so to speak. Also, most people work a regular schedule with only a few weeks off per year. Writing the Swimming Pool Steve Blog allows me a great deal of flexibility with when, and where, that I work. So I decided to do something far outside of my comfort zone and travel to the other side of the world for the first time. This is how the adventure begins.

travel vaccines are expensive
First Solo Trip Backpack Contents - With the first adventure only a week away this page talks about the excitement of getting ready to travel, and what to bring on a trip to Vietnam where you can only bring one bag and it needs to weight under 7 kilograms. Also included are essential electronic items that you should have while traveling as well as some surprising information on travel vaccines.

Drinking in Vietnam - Mot, hai, ba, yo
Drinking With 20 Vietnamese Terminators - In this story learn about local Vietnamese drinking traditions and why western sissies are usually not invited to parties in Vietnam. Reunification day and labor day holidays in Vietnam mean that the locals are ready to party...at least until the police showed up! Learn the only four Vietnamese words you need to know in order for everyone to be your friend in Vietnam.

What is it like in Cambodia
What Is It Like In Cambodia? - This blog post talks about what it is like to be in Siem Reap Cambodia from the moment that your plane touches down. Learn about downton Siem Reap, the countryside around Siem Reap, prices, food, transportation and hotels in this area of the world. This is not a travel guide so much as my observations after visiting Cambodia.

the worst pool leak in history
How A Leak Changed History - There must be one pool leak above all others that stands out as the worst one in history. This is what I had in mind when I went searching for compelling content for this website. This is the story of how water mastery allowed a giant population to grow and how leaking water brought an end to one of the worlds largest ancient cities.
