Hayward Tristar 1.85hp Unboxing
This page (and included video) detail the unboxing of a new Hayward Tristar variable speed pool pump, model SP32900VSP which is the 1.85hp VS model from the Tristar lineup. For those who read my website regularly you will likely already know that this is one of the pumps that I talk about most when looking at VS filtration pumps. The primary reasons for this, summarized, are that it is a versatile pump and can work with 115v or 230v power supplies, as well as functioning with 1.5" pipe, 2" pipe or 2.5" pipe effectively. In addition to this the pump performs extremely well throughout the medium head range and even up into the 60+ feet of head range normally associated with higher head applications.

It might be a surprise to pool owners to learn that the average swimming pool pump for sale on the market is too powerful to use on a regular pool. However, it is extremely common to see two and even three horsepower pumps on pools with pipes no larger than 2" in size. This is a pretty considerable mismatch and often can lead to dangerously powerful suction lines and excessive flow rates. Even the Tristar 900 we are unboxing here is extremely powerful with the 1.85hp motor and efficient hydraulic design this pump would be large enough to handle the filtration needs for all but the very largest or most feature rich swimming pools. More often than not the limiting factor for a pool is the number of suction and return lines, and more importantly, the size of the trunk line where all pipes converge to a single pipe through the filtration equipment.

What is included with the Hayward Tristar SP32900VSP pump? - There are a few models available depending on whether you have automation or require a stand alone pump (stand alone pump unboxed in the video below). This pump comes with dual CPVC unions for connecting to the pump intake and discharge ports. These are 2" PVC slip connection or 2.5" PVC spigot connection. Depending on the model you have it is likely the pump is dual voltage rated, though the online / open product line 1.85hp Tristar (SP3202VSP) is dedicated 230v only. You also receive an instruction / owners manual for the pump, as well as a fast start card to help you quickly set up, program and start using your new pump. You also receive a data cable (SPX3200DRCC) in the box which you do not need if you are operating this pump as a stand alone unit. The pump comes with an optional base mount which will raise the Tristar up to the native height of the Pentair Whisperflo pump series, to facilitate easy changing of competing brands with no extra plumbing reconfiguration being needed. All pump lids, gaskets, o-rings, pump lid and strainer basket are also included in the box.

Hayward Tristar 900 VS Pump UNBOXING
▶️

When you buy the Tristar VS 900 you are getting the top of the line flagship technology from Hayward as far as pump and driver controller quality, but in a more appropriately sized motor for a filtration pump versus the "big brother" to the pump model, the 2.7hp Hayward Tristar 950 (SP32950VSP). Unless you have some specific features of your pool such as an attached hot tub or in-floor cleaning system, and your pool has been purpose built for a more powerful pump, the smaller 1.85hp Tristar 900 is almost certainly a better choice for your pool.

Of course, every pool is unique (literally) and so this information can only be used as a general guide to help you zero in on potential pumps you are interested in. You can, and should, speak to a local pool and spa professional about selecting the right pump for your swimming pool. If you are interested in learning more about pool pumps and especially installation of pool pumps, be sure to check out this long form video about how to install a pool pump (better).
