Pentair SuperFlo 2
In an ongoing series of tests of variable speed pumps operating under different plumbing configurations this page is looking at a 1.5 horsepower Pentair SuperFlo variable speed pump (#342001) running on a 2" suction line as well as a 2" return line. This test includes a 150 square foot Hayward cartridge filter. The total resistance to flow on this system is approximately 25 to 30 feet of head. For clarity, this test best replicates a system with higher flow rate potential being that both the suction line as well as the return line are 2" in size. In this test the pump is wired with 230 volts which means that the pump has more power available than at the lower voltage supply option. Every pool system is unique and the RPM and flow rate you see here will not be the same flow rate you experience for a given RPM of motor speed. There are many variables which affect the flow potential of your pool pump. This is why it is so important for pool owners to buy and install a swimming pool flow meter. This is especially true for owners of variable speed pumps since you can not possibly get the most value out of your investment in a variable speed pump if you do not have any way of actually knowing how much water you are pumping. Still, it can be helpful to see examples of real life flow rates and electrical consumption as you can relate this information to your pool, and this can aid you in determining the viability of an upgrade like a variable speed pump for your pool. (Hint: You definitely want one)

Both 1.5" and 2" PVC sound to be very similar in size. Not all that much difference between these sizes...but in the world of flow rates there is quite a lot different between 1.5" and 2" pipe. The flow potential for a 2" pipe is a lot more than a 1.5" pipe and it also has the ability to move the water much more efficiently.

Larger pipes mean more flow volume AND more efficiency at the same time which is definitely something that you should want as a pool owner. To learn more about how pipe size affects flow rates, and what flow rates you can expect from different pipe sizes you can read this article about pipe size for pool systems.

Be sure to subscribe to the Swimming Pool Steve YouTube Channel to see if changing the size of the suction and return pipes, or changing the number of pipes used, has a measurable result on the electrical consumption and flow rates. Or just to learn more about how to properly take care of your pool or spa.
