Hayward Super Pump VS Unboxing
The original Hayward Super Pump might be the most popular pool pump ever sold. Of course modern day swimming pools need to have more efficient filtration pumps and this is the variable speed adaptation of the original Super Pump design. Hayward has quite a few variable speed pump models on the market and this one represents smaller to mid sized pool installations, along with the MaxFlo VS, but larger and more demanding pool filtration systems would likely use the Tristar 900 and Tristar 950 models of variable speed pump from Hayward.

Even the Super Pump VS itself has a few available variations such as the dealer protected Super Pump 700 which is SP2670020VSP from your local pool and spa store. That model is compatible with both 115V or 230V power supplies, where if you shop from the open product line the Super Pump VS is split into dedicated power options with SP26115VSP being the smaller 0.85 HP motor size and the SP2603VSP being the 1.65 HP, 230 volt Super Pump VS from the open product line. When purchased online Hayward pumps would also include the W3 notation - W3SP2603VSP. While the pumps available online are very similar to the pumps available from a brick and mortar store, there are small differences including upgraded pump seals for expert line part numbers as well as extended warranty periods available for equipment purchased and installed by swimming pool professionals.

Hayward Super Pump VS #SP2603VSP
- VS version of one of the most popular pool pumps ever made
- Variable speed design for maximum electrical savings
- Works on 1.5" pipe, 2" pipe or even larger
- Ideal for smaller and medium sized pools
- Compatible with 230 volt systems (See SP26700VSP for dual voltage)

This will be the right pump for your pool if you have a small or medium sized pool and you do not have extensive peripheral devices to run like waterfalls or water features, spa jets, in-floor cleaning systems, etc. and just need a good all-around choice for reliability and efficiency. Suitable for low and medium head applications this pump has a larger leaf strainer than the Maxflo VS which is the next most similar Hayward VS pump. This allows for more organic debris collection than the Maxflo but with a smaller motor size and flow volume potential than either of the Hayward Tristar VS pump models. Be sure to pay attention to the model number of your pump as you want to pick a pump with a voltage that matches the supply you have. Similar to the SuperFlo VS from Pentair, Hayward offers a dual voltage model option from their dealer protected "expert line" of pumps, SP2670020VSP. The pump unboxed in this video is the SP2603VSP dedicated 230 volt version.

What Comes With The Hayward Super Pump VS?

When you open the box for your new Super Pump VS you will find that it is almost ready to go right out of the box. You will need to provide a wiring connection to the rear of the pump. The electrical threads are standard 1/2" such that an L-16 box connector would fit. Electrical box strain relief connectors should be waterproof, which makes them a lot more expensive than the non-waterproof alternative. It is worth the effort to pay more for proper water sealed electrical connections for your pool pump. This is definitely not an area you want to ask your electrician to cheap out on. Pay extra for waterproof electrical wire and box connectors for hooking up pool pumps.

The plumbing ports are 1.5" female threads so you will need to purchase additional plumbing parts to connect this pump. If you are replacing a Hayward Super Pump (single speed) or a Pentair SuperFlo / Sta-Rite SuperPro pump then the suction height and distance from suction to discharge ports will be identical. These pumps are manufactured to be easy to swap between competing brands with minimal alterations to the existing plumbing being required.

This picture is a high temperature union which is a great option for connecting your pipes to the Super Pump VS. You can also just use a high temperature male adapter without the union as another option. High temperature PVC pipe is called CPVC and having the first connection to your pump being extra resistant to heat is a good thing. Even if the rest of your pipes are PVC and not heat rated, the pump connection can fail and begin to leak from heat distortion so a great preemptive move is to use a CPVC male adapter or high temperature union. Just remember to get a 1.5" male thread as the Super Pump VS only has a 1.5" female thread connection port. If you intend to use 2" plumbing on your system then you can use a fitting to switch to 2" right out of the pump: 1.5" thread x 2" slip male adapter.

The two winterization drainage ports on the bottom-front and side of the Super Pump VS have a slot indicating that a standard screwdriver can be used to open and close them. This can strip easily and a 9/16" wrench is a better option however the plastic nuts need a very gentle touch with a wrench as you do not want to sheer the head off. A gentle snug is enough to seal up these ports. The lid gasket will already be in place and I prefer to not remove mine from this model unless I have to, so I recommend to add silicone-based lubricant to the exposed face of the gasket. In the future if the pump develops a suction side leak, or if the gasket ever displaces when you remove the pump lid, be sure to cover with silicone-based lubricant before resetting it in the housing groove. The screen and interface on this model of Super Pump VS can be rotated 360 degrees by removing two screws from the face and rotating as needed. The screen and interface can be remotely mounted with an extension wire as well as being able to be controlled through automation systems, or it can operate as a stand alone unit with a built in timer system.

You should have five times the pipe diameter you are using as a straight and unobstructed run on the inlet for most efficient flow dynamics. Pump rooms for pools are always too small so equipment tends to get cramped in place. Since you are investing in a more expensive pump you definitely want to give it the room it needs to function effectively and that includes circulation of air even though this is a TEFC totally enclosed fan cooled pump motor design.
